Imperio Android App Allows Remote Access of PCs - TMC Net

Complex setup and a near expert level of computer competence are needed by IT professionals and the super tech savvy to access and control a computer remotely. High monthly fees also need to be shelled out by these professionals for the remote access. A cost-effective app for Android (News - Alert) phones and tablets has been launched by Mobisoft Corp. As the app allows users to remotely control the PCs, the app has been aptly named Imperio after the “Imperius Curse” from the popular Harry Potter films.

Priced at only $9.99, Imperio will make remote PC access an essential everyday tool for anyone’s mobile device. For the first lucky 1000 users however, the straightforward easy-to-install system will be available only for $4.99.

According to Dan Metcalfe, CEO of Mobisoft Corp., keeping the users in mind, the company has built Imperio from the ground up. The company realizes that most remote access tools like RDP or VNC programs are too complex and corporate focused.

In a release, Metcalfe said, “We wanted to design an app that was powerful, but simple enough that anyone could use it, I’m confident that users will find we have done just that.”

Imperio is at par with some major competitors including LogMeIn (News - Alert) Ignition and Wyse in terms of features and speed. Users can turn on their computers remotely with Imperio. Users will therefore be able to access all their files and application. Users will always have data at their fingertips with Imperio’s quick and easy file transfers to and from device.

Imperio also allows for music and audio streaming from PC to Mobile. This will allow the user to see and hear what’s going on. The remote computer screen can be easily navigated from the mobile device with the Pinch/Pull feature of Imperio.

Imperio has PC compatibility with Windows 7, XP, Visa and all Windows Server versions. Unlimited remote machine access on one license is provided with Imperio’s multi-device support feature. Imperio also features built in NLA or Network Level Authentication and TLS security methods. The app also features RDP 256-bit and 128-bit SSL encryption. Imperio also has Android compatibility on mobile devices and tablets.

Smartphone is the first step to escape PC dependency - Forbes (blog)

Jul. 11 2011 - 4:47 am | 1,443 views | 0 recommendations |

Mobile internet has been hot for more than 10 years in asia and scandinavia, but the iPhone started a revolution. The real smartphone revolution was not about technology, it was about unlimited data plan (content and services accessible 24*7*365) and an integrated distribution model (iTunes). The iPhone showed content providers, software makers, and telcos what role a tiny device can play in consumers’ daily usage. A smartphone is much more than a phone, it is the link to tens of millions of users’ digital life. Thus, mobile devices shipment is expected to override PCs shipment in the current year.

This is the caption

How is this possible? To make it short, smartphones are highly addictive, reliable and pervasive. Not only they allow us to be connected to or friends and colleagues (mail and Twitter / Facebook), but they help us find our way (maps and GPS), inform and entertain us (news and games), capture our memory (pictures and short films) and provide us with tons of online services through apps. Apple was a key player in this adoption trend, but the market is evolving quickly and as soon as low-cost smartphones will be launched to the market (powered with Google’s Android mobile OS), mobile internet will be mainstream in developed countries (half of internet connexions in India is made thought mobile devices).

Than their is the Kindle and the ebooks tsunami which allows Amazon to sell more digital books than printed books. As for Apple and iTunes, the Amazon integrated distribution model educate consumers to new usages and allow copycats to step in with alternatives offers (B&N, Nook…).

Now we also have the iPad. Once again, thanks to his know-how, Apple manage to transform an already known innovation (touchbook) into a new successful content and services delivery device. Not only the iPad allows us to achieve common online tasks (checking email, browsing the web, updating your status…), it made us paid for freely available content (news), but it helped develop and market new content types (rich digital magazines, touch games, dual screen app, choose-your-own-adventure films…).

Smartphones, touchbooks and ereaders helped consumers realize personal computers are no longer needed to enjoy digital content and online services. Moreover, these new device types improved the reading / using experience by replacing power (gigabits) by ease of use (touch interfaces). More recently Google introduced us with the cloudbooks: Always connected netbooks with the Chrome browser as the only interface. A radical shift from traditional computers (since you cannot install any software), but a new value proposition (no software or antivirus to update, unlimited data storage in the cloud…).

10 years ago, we where invaded by multiple devices (laptops, PDAs, MP3 players…). Later, the iPhone helped us to get ride of them by providing a single multi-function device. But what we are witnessing today, is a new wave of dedicated devices. With the ongoing innovation trend, new device types are coming to a the market : smartframes, cloudbooks, digital TV… As you can see in this chart, alternative devices provide us with new type of content and services, and with new consomption context: it is easier and more confortable to read/watch/use them on those new device types than on a traditional PC.

Alternate devices landscape

We have reach a paradigme in IT: A new era where keyboards, mice and softwares are to become outdated. The future of connected devices will be all about the cloud and integrated distribution models. Speaking of which, OnLive (and more generally the gaming-as-a-service industry) is a perfect example of how personnal cloud technology can help revive an industry by repackaging content and providing users with more easier and flexible means to consume them.

To take part of this revolution, you will have to pay a close attention to those alternate devices and to progressively adapt your offering by:

Letting other players access your content and services and provide alternate devices’ users with them (licence fee included) ;Making your content and services accessible to alternative devices with adaptive layout (HTML5 can help) ;Provide tailored content and services to alternative devices by taking advantages of their strengths (GPS location, accelerometer, NFC…).

Users’ habit are rapidly evolving, and PC will soon no longer be the main access to you content, services AND advertisings. You have to move fast if you do not want to miss this train (convoy?).

8 Reasons Why iPhone 5 Will be Best Selling Smartphone - International Business Times

The iPhone 5 is one of the most eagerly awaited devices in recent memory -- and despite delays in getting it out, there are several factors that will play into its expected domination in the smartphone race this fall.

With rivals like Samsung gaining foothold in other parts of the world, with record sales of Galaxy line smartphones and the Samsung Galaxy S2 setting the pace, Apple’s expected launch of iPhone 5 in the U.S. market this September will not be an unchallenged one. But until now, Apple has not given any official indication or divulged any details regarding the iPhone5's specs.

Here is a look at eight reasons why the iPhone 5 can become the best-selling smartphone this fall.

Design:
The design of any product plays an important role, especially with smartphones as it is very important to combine art, science and technology to create tangible three-dimensional product. If Motorola Atrix is taken into consideration, although the smartphone came with revolutionary features in the beginning of this year, the device has vanished from radar for the last six months. Perhaps Motorola blamed the rounded look of the Atrix for its poor sales. But the recent leaked picture of Motorola Droid Bionic shows an improved design looking similar to an iPhone.

When it comes to the iPhone, Apple has always updated the design of their smartphone each year. Designers Michal Bonikowski and Antoine Brieux have played it safe with the design of the new iPhone. In fact iPhone 4 and Apple’s original iPad looks very similar in terms of design. The iPad 2 which was launched this year with aluminum back-panel with white frame was thinner and lighter compared to original iPad, hence the probability of iPhone 5 sporting an aluminum back-panel along with thinness is a certain prospect. Keeping in mind the track record of Apple delivering exceptional innovation in terms of design, expect a nice looking smartphone in either case.

Sales:
Apple iPhone has become the best selling smartphone to date. No compelling mobile device has been able to slow the sales of the iPhone. Although many other smartphones with powerful features and cutting edge software made it to the market, it didn’t alter the sales of the iPhone. One of the latest rumors suggests that Apple has contracted with a manufacturing company to build 15 million iPhone 5 units. If that is the case, Apple’s prediction has never failed. Although not many details are known up till this point, there is little chance that the iPhone 5 won’t sell exceedingly well. Whenever one considers the history, most of the time it repeats and Apple iPhone 5 will be no exception.

Brand:
A brand is an identifiable entity that makes some specific promise of value and a brand which is widely known in the marketplace acquires brand recognition. And Apple brand is a well recognized for that matter and prominent one too. Consumers may look on branding as an important value added aspect of products or services, as it often serves to denote a certain attractive quality or characteristic. From the perspective of brand owners, branded products or services also command higher prices. Hence consumers won't mind paying that extra buck because of the quality of the brand.

Apple has considerably become a brand which creates trust and an emotional attachment. This attachment then causes the consumers to decide on a their product. And lately, Apple has now become the world’s most valuable brand according to a study published by global research agency Millward Brown.

Apple’s brand value jumped 84% to $153.3 billion, driven largely by the company’s success with the iPad and iPhone 4, the study found. Brands’ values were determined by a mix of factors, including future earnings (discounted to their present-day values) and in-depth consumer surveys, Millward Brown says. And Apple has done that exceptionally well; hence, iPhone 5 sitting on the glorious success of its predecessor is expected to bask in glory too.

Moreover, Steve Jobs, the Apple’s Founder and CEO has described Apple as a “mobile devices company”, the largest one in the world, also Apple’s revenues are bigger than Nokia, Samsung or Sony’s mobility business.

Marketing Strategy:
Marketing is very important in building customer relationships as well as creating product awareness. Without an effective marketing strategy you stand to not gain customers or lose customers which equates to revenue loss and no growth. For a company to grow, marketing is the vehicle.

Brand name is not the only thing needed to stir the product, the biggest example being Google Nexus One. The smartphone was listed among top ten gadgets of 2010. Although the phone was one of the best in terms of design and brand but without effective marketing if failed to click. In fact, Google is one of the best brands around the market, but intensive marketing to stimulate hype for a product is very important.

Product positioning has been described as 'winning the hearts and the minds of customers'. Great brands have long term customers (for example. the 'love affair' that Mac customers have with their Apple computers; iPods, etc.)

In case of Apple, as soon as it announces a new device, the company takes to the airwaves describing the new device and showcasing the finer points. As it is customers gets excited and the product becomes an instant hit. The iPhone 5 will enjoy the same privilege.

Also Apple is good at rebuilding strained relationships with its customers as Apple goes out of its way to attract these customers with the promise of lower prices, better tools and more collegial relationships.

Operating System:
The iOS operating system is found in both iPhone smartphone and the iPad tablet. Lately, iOS 5.0 and its features were announced on June 6 at the WWDC 2011 keynote address. The expected release date is believed to be in the third quarter of 2011. The new operating system comes with iCloud service and the Notification Center, as well as improvements to native apps such as Camera. Moreover, the new operating system has more than 200 new features. In fact, the operating system of Apple is a mobile operating system that was already years ahead of anything else before Android could make its splash.

Most of today’s operating systems found in the market like Android, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry 7 OS have only bettered the features of iOS previous versions. And the iOS previous versions are almost a year old. With iOS 5 going to be updated in iPad’s latest version, it is obvious that even if iPhone 5 is not released with iOS 5, there is sure going to be an immediate update to iOS 5 versions.

Many users were upset with iOS notification feature but that will change as iOS 5 will come equipped with cutting-edge notifications, messaging and cable-free connectivity. It is noticeable that the Apple has borrowed few features from Android most notably like Cloud Synchronization, Notification Center, Over-the-air updates, Photo sharing and Twitter.

Other noticeable features of iOS 5 that looks promising include the phone-to-phone messaging and iMessage looking a lot like BlackBerry Messenger, newspaper or magazine subscriptions, advanced reminder system (No one can get close to iOS reminder due to its geo-fencing location-based notifications), system wide twitter integration, quick camera access, photo editing tools (When Android allows crop and rotate, iOS has better advantage with crop, edit, red eye reduction, composition controls and auto-enhance), tabbed browsing is not found in Android phones, clutter-free web reading, iOS allows users to receive formatted mail but Android doesn’t, PC free setup and updates, wireless synchronization (Everything in your iTunes library including photos and video can sync over the air compared to Blackberry which only handles music but not video) and online gaming community.

App Store:
As of May 2011, Apple approves its 500,000th app, 37 percent of all apps are free with the average price $3.64. iPhone 5, the new baby on the block will have all this advantage with it. At early July 2011, 200 million iOS users have downloaded over 15 billion apps from its App Store. Actually the term app has become a popular buzzword; in January 2011, app was awarded the honor of being 2010's "Word of the Year" by the American Dialect Society.

Apple’s walled garden hasn’t stopped users from grabbing apps by the billions and Android Market has been steadily gaining grounds but is yet to match App Store. The hottest plus feature of App Store include navigation - the iPhone buttons at the bottom of the screen provides access to every section of the store showing featured, categories, top 25, search and updates – using single tap accessing particular section is easy, although android provides with great search and back buttons on phone hardware, however without dedicated tabs for navigation the only way out is through back button and difficult to come out through subcategories and searches.

But one significant advantage of Android Market apps is that that the Android OS is open source and the technology is designed to be extended by an active community. The open source approach has been proven to drive faster innovation and wider adoption in countless examples and Google is counting on it to best their proprietary competition. Officially Android Market has 200,000 plus apps but estimated apps show 400,000 plus. And Google’s Apple store downloads as of May 2011 shows it to be 3 billion. Additionally in terms of growth, the Android market added 28,000 new apps in April 2011, whereas Apple added 11,000 new apps. Distimo forecasted that the number of Android apps would surpass Apple apps before the end of July 2011, whereas Germany-based research2guidance forecasted Android apps to surpass Apple apps in August 2011 at 425,000 apps. And other app stores are far away from App Store and Android Market.

Carriers:
Apple iPhone was selling well even before it reached the carriers like Verizon and AT&T. The iPhone 5 is expected to feature international support as the consumers will be able to use the device on a GSM network around the world which will benefit world travelers.

And as AT&T is planning to gain the regulatory approval to acquire T-Mobile in US, Apple’s chances of boasting iPhone 5 will become likely as those tens of millions of additional customers with the acquisition can explode sales for Apple.

With the launch of the Verizon iPhone earlier this year, it seems more like than ever that Apple will support the carrier’s 4G network. As Verizon has the potential to reach more than 100 million people with 4G network, most reports suggest Apple will capitalize on that and bring 4G connectivity to the next Verizon iPhone.

Improved specifications:
Although many smartphones in the market came up with better specifications showing better processor, RAM and battery than iPhone 4, Apple’s iPhone 4 was never less popular. But with rumors showing it to feature a 1.2 GHz dual core processor, possible 1 GB RAM (Apple always upgrades RAM with every release) and improved battery life, Apple again will gain the much needed attention.

Lexmark unveils mobile printing app - Lexington Herald Leader

Lexmark International unveiled an app Monday that allows users to print from their Android-powered tablet computers and phones.

The Lexington-based printer maker will initially offer the application for download with the upcoming Cisco Cius tablet aimed at business users.

The application allows users to send documents to printers by other manufacturers, not just Lexmark, said Kay Kienast, vice president of worldwide marketing for the company.

The app will allow the printing of common formats such as PDFs, and .jpg and .tif photographs. Microsoft Office documents will not be supported, although they can be converted to PDFs.

The app was designed by Lexmark researchers to emulate printing on a PC. Users begin the process by using their Android sharing menu, as they would to transmit photos or other data on the devices.

"You then see the Lexmark Mobile Print option, choose it and it moves forward in many ways like it does with a PC," said Randy Sparks, Lexmark's director of worldwide solutions marketing.

The company has offered mobile printing processes since 2008, because its business customers wanted ways to print from their BlackBerry devices. This app takes the process a step further, making it easier to identify the printers to be used.

Users can enter the name of the printer, do a network search to find it, or scan a QR code located on the printer to let the phone know where to print, Sparks said.

Kienast said Lexmark chose to go with Cisco for the launch of the app because of the latter's strength with business customers.

The app doesn't require additional support, such as servers, from businesses' technology departments, a factor that should make it more appealing.

"Enterprises like to set a standard," Sparks said. "They don't like to roll out the next new app every month, ... so that's really what we've tried to do."

Kienast declined to say how much the app will cost in Cisco's marketplace or how much of a share Lexmark will receive.

She said the app also will work on other mobile operating systems, including Apple's, but she declined to discuss how quickly Lexmark might try to roll it out to the iPad or Android tablets and phones from other manufacturers.

"We view this as a large upcoming space," she said.

The Ups and Downs of Tablet Video Chatting - PC Magazine

Video chatting is going mainstream, and if you're buying a tablet, it's a feature worth considering. Which tablets do it best?

You can't turn around these days without finding a way to video chat. You can video chat on Facebook and Google+, on PCs and Macs, on Skype and Fring, and on countless mobile devices. Companies are betting on video chat replacing text-based chat, which itself has supplanted phone calls and voice as the primary means of communications. No one's betting more on that shift than tablet manufacturers, which are making video chat an ever-more integral part of their offerings.

If tablets and video are the future, we decided to see how the future works, and how quickly we all need to get over making phone calls in our underwear. We grabbed some of the tablets around the PCMag Labs, and put their video-calling capabilities to the test to see which ones are viable chatting options, and which simply are not.

There were some overall takeaways from our tests, in addition to some platform- and device-specific findings. You can't turn around these days without finding a way to video chat. Video chat may be catching on fast, but it's not yet a perfect system. Different companies use different, non-compatible applications, and the quality of the experience varies wildly.

We're a long way from the equivalent of picking up the phone and dialing anyone in the country, or being able to text anyone just by using their phone number. Video chat is a hodgepodge of applications and usernames, and there's no good way to integrate things yet. If video calling is going to catch on, it's going to need to standardize to the point where my TouchPad can call your iPad, or your computer, or your phone. We're not there yet, not even close.

All that said, however, video chat is already a fun and useful way to communicate, though some platforms are more fun and more useful than others. We investigated webOS, iOS, Android, and BlackBerry video-chat offerings to find the good and bad of every platform, so hit the slideshow or read on for our findings.

Apple iPad 2
The iPad uses FaceTime, an Apple-specific, video-chat application that works on iPads, iPhones, iPods and Macs.
The Good: FaceTime consistently had the best video quality of any video-chatting app I tested. It lagged less and looked sharper. It's also extremely easy to use, with a simple and excellent interface, and cleverly identifies people by their email addresses so you don't need to look for yet another username.
The Bad: It's Apple-device-only. It's a separate app, pulled away from all text-based chatting, and doesn't integrate as well with the address book or other apps as it should. Calls can also only be made over Wi-Fi, which is good for call quality but terrible for convenience of use.
The Verdict: FaceTime is the best video-chatting app available on a tablet, but Apple's poor track record of making its applications friendly with other platforms means it's not likely to be the standard.

HP TouchPad
The HP TouchPad uses Skype for all its calling, both voice and video.
The Good: Skype is integrated all over the TouchPad, from contact lists to the Messaging app. You can initiate a call from anywhere, call real phones with Skype Out, and more. It's much closer to a full phone app than just video chatting.
The Bad: Video chatting only works in portrait mode, and in my tests the person on the other end complained about the camera quality. The lack of a rear-facing camera means you can't use it during video chat to display items at which you are looking.
The Verdict: Skype is the current grand poobah of video chatting, and will likely continue to be so thanks to its recent integration into Facebook (though that integration is more a technology than an actual Skype client), but the TouchPad's video-chatting hardware and Skype app aren't up to par.

Samsung Galaxy Tab
The Galaxy Tab, like all tablets running Android Honeycomb (3.0 or above), uses Google Talk for video chatting.
The Good: Google Talk is one of the most cross-platform chat programs available, since it's both a standalone app and embedded in Gmail. That means you can use your Android tablet to chat with people on other tablets, as well as computers and smartphones. It also uses your Google account, so as soon as you log in to your tablet you're logged in to Google Talk. Multiple accounts are supported, so you can chat with all your friends on various accounts.
The Bad: Google Talk video is typically low-res, which looks bad on such a large screen. You can only use a Google account, which means no Skyping. Android tablets have a nasty trend of having off-center cameras, so you have to hold the tablet at a weird angle to be seen properly.
The Verdict: Google Talk has the best chance of any app, other than maybe Skype, to be the cross-platform standard for video chatting, but Android tablets need to step up their hardware game for it to be a good experience.

BlackBerry PlayBook
The BlackBerry PlayBook didn't ship with a video-chatting app, but it's now available in the App World and as a software update.
The Good: Though it wasn't available at launch, the BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat app is now available, as a software update or in App World. Camera quality is good, so video looks good. Video can stream from either the front- or rear-facing camera.
The Bad: PlayBook Video Chat only lets you chat with other PlayBook owners, so odds are good you won't be able to find a chat buddy. The camera faces straight forward, but the lens is off center, so, like Android, you'll have to hold it at a goofy angle to frame your face properly. Calling only works over Wi-Fi.
The Verdict: The PlayBook's camera is good, but the video-chatting app is extremely barebones, doesn't work with anything other than other PlayBooks, and doesn't do anything other apps don't.

Trend Micro Helps MSPs Embrace IT Consumerization - MSPmentor

The new breed of mobility represented by devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Apple iPhone also presents IT staff with a slew of potential headaches, as employees increasingly want to use their own tablets, smartphones and, yes, home computers in the workplace. To help MSPs and cloud service providers meet the challenge of that IT consumerization, Trend Micro has updated its Mobile Security offering to version 7.

Trend Micro recently surveyed “enterprise IT decision-makers” and found that 74 percent of organizations already allowed employees to use their own devices. Moreover, 80 percent of respondents said putting critical data on a mobile device makes it far more susceptible to attack and breach.

To address those concerns, Trend Micro Mobile Security 7 is offering the following features, according to the press release:

Centralized, single console device management, which includes individual device provisioning/de-provisioning for network and application access, as well as visibility into device status.Data protection, which ranges from remote lock and wipe in the event of theft to locking down Bluetooth access, card readers and even cameras to meet regulatory compliance needs.Malware protection powered by Trend Micro cloud intelligence.Support for most major smartphone platforms, including Apple iOS, Google Android, Symbian and Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

The new security offering is available now, either standalone or as part of the larger Trend Micro OfficeScan physical and virtual security infrastructure, both at $23.70 per user for enterprises with 251 or more seats.

The company is also offering Trend Micro Mobile Security 7 as part of its various Enterprise Security Suite offerings for between $39 and $70 per user depending on the edition chosen, with discounts given for adding it to an existing deployment. It’s also a free upgrade for Mobile Security 5.5 users with current maintenance.

No doubt, the Apple iPad and devices like it are only getting more popular. We’ll be keeping an eye on how the channel deals with the rising trend, so keep watching.

Philadelphia Media Network unveils digital tablet plan - Philadelphia Inquirer

business: article: autoplay - OFF: continuous - OFF: tpltID - 21418340001Philly papers offer Android tablets with paid appsPhilly papers to sell Android tablets with contentPosted on Mon, Jul. 11, 2011 By Jeff Gelles

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Philadelphia Media Network will soon start selling deeply discounted Android tablet computers packaged with four applications that will display digital versions of its two newspapers, The Inquirer and the Daily News, as well as additional content from The Inquirer and the company's Philly.com website.

In a meeting Monday morning with employees at the company's Conshohocken printing plant, Greg Osberg, chief executive officer and publisher, said the digital initiative would break ground in the industry, which has been struggling to maintain revenues as consumers gradually shift their reading preferences from print publications to computers, smartphones, and other digital devices.

And during an afternoon news conference, Osberg also announced a new media-technology incubator, to be housed at Philadelphia Media's headquarters and financed partly by a $250,000 grant from the Knight Foundation to Ben Franklin Technology Partners, another participant in Project Liberty.

Osberg called the initiative unprecedented, and Donna Frisby-Greenwood of the Knight Foundation agreed.

Frisby-Greenwood said the foundation had spent $100 million in grants over the last four years to support media and journalism projects.

"This will be the first opportunity we have to incubate new technology within a media organization," she said.

Mark Block, Philadelphia Media's vice president of external affairs, said the discounted tablets were just part of a broader plan that the company calls its Project Liberty initiative, to be detailed at another meeting with staffers and at a news conference Monday afternoon.

"In terms of Philadelphia's status as one of the largest media markets in the United States, it only is expected that our company needs to provide digital products that will be received as unprecedented in the entire industry," Block said.

Tablets, which have soared in popularity since the April 2010 launch of the Apple iPad, are widely seen as presenting a new opportunity for the media industry. Although Block said Philadelphia Media would not announce the brand of tablets it plans to offer, tablets using Google's Android operating system perform similarly to the iPad, which measures about 71/2 by 101/2 inches and weighs about 11/2 pounds, and sell for $300 to $800.

Block also declined to discuss the company's financial projections for the initiative, expected to begin in the second half of August with the sale of about 2,000 tablets, followed by a full-scale launch later this year.

"There are still refinements being made to the product," Block said.

Block confirmed an account published Monday by AdWeek, which said that the arrangement would allow Philadelphia Media to have access to usage data that "will give it a read on how people consume newspaper content on a tablet."

Block said the discount would exceed 50 percent of the combined price of the apps and tablet, and would be available to digital subscribers who agreed to buy the bundle of apps for one or two years.

"No one in the U.S. has bundled the device with content," Osberg told AdWeek. "We want to gain significant market share in this area, and we want to learn about consumer behavior. Our goal is to be the most innovative media company in the United States."

Website leaks purported Dell tablet plans - Austin American-Statesman (blog)

Items about Austin businesses by American-Statesman reporters.

The entry titled "Website leaks purported Dell tablet plans."

Home > The Ticker > Archives > 2011 > July > 11 > Entry

By Kirk Ladendorf | Monday, July 11, 2011, 03:30 PM

Dell Inc. may be getting close to introducing a new Windows-compatible tablet computer, according to several tech websites that released photos of proposed prototypes Monday.

A list of tech websites all quoted from a blog posting called “DellPejuInsider” that disclosed what it said were Dell internal documents and photos of prototypes of the forthcoming computer.

Dell had no comment on the reports.

Jeff Clarke, Dell’s vice chairman of global operations, had told industry analysts last week that the computer maker intends to develop mobile Internet devices, including tablets, that are aimed at business customers, an not necessarily consumers.

The blog showed a Dell prototype that had a 10-inch screen, weighed 1.9 pounds, and ran with an Intel Core i5 processor and had Wi-Fi and cellular 3G and 4G connectivity. The blog said the tablet used Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 7 software, but added that it was “Windows 8 compatible,” a reference to Micosoft’s forthcoming software that is expected to be ready next year.

Dell already has a tablet called the Streak, based on Google’s Android software. Sales of the Streak, introduced last year, have been disappointing, analysts say.

The Peju could be a way of attracting the interest of corporate buyers who are waiting for the arrival of Windows 8 before they make a final commitment.

Analyst Rob Enderle with the Enderle Group said the Dell Peju could be a “placeholder product” for a stronger offering based in Windows 8 that will be available in 2011. Enderle expects Windows 8 will be available in a test version late this year, so corporate buyers can test the new Windows software on the Dell Peju tablet and see whether they want to buy it next year.

“Corporate buyers can test Windows 8 in advance with a product like this,” Enderle said.

The tablet would underscore Dell’s commitment to being a close partner with Microsoft in the tablet market. That tight alliance with Micrsoft, something Dell has always depended on for everything from desktop computers to servers “could be huge for Dell” in the tablet market, he added.

Apple Seeks to Halt Imports of HTC Flyer Tablet, Droid Phone - Bloomberg

HTC Corp. (2498), Asia’s second-largest maker of smartphones, was accused of infringing Apple Inc. (AAPL) patents in a case that may halt U.S. imports of the Taiwanese company’s phones and its new Flyer tablet computers.

Apple claims HTC is infringing five patents related to software architecture and user interfaces in portable electronic devices, hardware for touch screens and movement sensors, according to the complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington. The complaint filed July 8 is the second Apple has filed against Taoyuan, Taiwan-based HTC.

Apple has been using the trade commission, which has the power to block products from the U.S. market, to pursue makers of mobile phones that run Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system and compete with its iPhone. With the filing of the complaint against HTC, and one filed July 5 against Samsung Electronics Co., Apple is expanding the battle to tablet computers that challenge the market position of the iPad.

“HTC is dismayed that Apple has resorted to competition in the courts rather than the marketplace,” said Grace Lei, HTC’s general counsel. “HTC continues to vehemently deny all of Apple’s past and present claims against it and will continue to protect and defend its own intellectual property as it has already done this year.”

In March, HTC released the Flyer, its first tablet device in the U.S. to rival Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. The Flyer has a 7-inch screen and uses Android, while its second tablet, called EVO View 4G, offers faster connections over Sprint Nextel Corp. (S)’s fourth-generation network.

The latest Apple complaint, which also names mobile phones including the Droid Incredible, Wildfire, EVO 4G and Desire, doesn’t list the EVO View tablet among the targeted products.

HTC agreed last week to buy S3 Graphics Co. for $300 million after the maker of video-game graphics chips won an infringement ruling at the trade agency against Apple. HTC also has its own patent complaint against Cupertino, California-based Apple at the commission, with findings scheduled to be released Sept. 16.

A trade commission judge is scheduled to issue a decision in Apple’s first case against HTC on Aug. 5. Those findings are subject to review by the full commission.

The newest case claims infringement of patents that cover “groundbreaking technologies developed by Apple in conjunction with the development of its innovative iPhone, iPad and iPod touch products,” Apple said in the complaint.

Apple, which has accused competitors of “widespread imitation,” also has patent battles at the trade agency with Samsung Electronics and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., both makers of Android-based phones. The Samsung complaint targets both the Galaxy phone and Galaxy tablet computer.

Android is the most popular mobile-device operating system in the U.S., accounting for 38 percent of the market in the three months ended in May, according to Reston, Virginia-based researcher ComScore Inc. Apple’s iOS, used in the iPad and iPhone, made up 27 percent of the market.

HTC on July 6 reported sales and net income that surpassed analyst expectations for the second-quarter, ending June 30, after it released models with faster download speeds and better displays. Both HTC and Apple more than doubled revenue from mobile phones in the March quarter from a year earlier as they race to offer their products in more markets globally.

Seeking to expand its patent portfolio, HTC said in April it paid $75 million for wireless communications patents from ADC Telecommunications Inc. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s database, 171 patents have been assigned to HTC. The most recent are two issued on July 5 for audio signal processing and an electronic device with a user input device.

Apple, once best known for its Mac computers, now relies on its iPhone for about 50 percent of sales and the iPad tablet for 12 percent, according to first-quarter figures compiled by Bloomberg.

The commission issued a notice yesterday seeking information on any public issues raised by the complaint. Such requests have become standard, to allow the agency to determine if an exclusion order should be granted, should Apple win the case.

The new complaint is In the Matter of Portable Electronic Devices and Related Software, Complaint No. 2828, U.S. International Trade Commission (Washington). Apple’s earlier case against HTC is In the Matter of Certain Personal Data and Mobile Communications Devices and Related Software, and the HTC case against Apple is In the Matter of Portable Electronic Devices, 337-721, both ITC.

Allowing Mobile Users to Create Their Own 'Direct Cloud' With Their PCs, Polkast Offers an Innovative Solution for Searching, Sending and Viewing Files on a Tablet, iPad, or Smart Phone

CAPO BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - Jul 11, 2011) - Polkast, a revolutionary service that allows consumers to access and work on their digital content from anywhere at any time, today announced its official launch. Users can access files stored on their home or office PC directly on a tablet or smart phone instantly, easily and securely. Because Polkast allows devices to communicate directly over a local network, you can create your own 'Direct Cloud' with instantaneous downloads without the need for expensive syncing software or uploading to an online storage site.

"Everyone is talking about cloud services, but a cloud service can rain on your digital parade because they're not always secure, speedy, or available. Instead of sending you up to the cloud we are bringing the cloud to you, allowing you to create your own 'Direct Cloud' dynamically and directly between your mobile devices with your PCs," said Hong Bui, founder and CEO of Polkast. "There's no need for a round trip to the cloud when your devices are next to each other. Polkast is the 'blue sky' for tablet and smart phone users who want control and a faster, safer solution for accessing all their content, from across the room or across the globe."

Polkast is built from the ground up to give tablet and mobile devices the simplest, fastest, and most reliable way to access all your content on demand. There's no need to waste time uploading, syncing or waiting for files to download. Fetch a 1GB video file in few minutes rather than an hour. Files are cached, so you can enjoy a movie or keep working on your tablet when you're offline. Users also don't have to worry about paying for a limited amount of online storage or pre-planning what files to upload to where. And, since files are stored on your computer in your own network environment, users can have the peace of mind knowing all are securely under your control. Communication and data transferred between your devices are authenticated and encrypted, and none of your files are kept in some online Internet storage site.

When mobile devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, Polkast communicates with them directly. Searching, transferring, sending and viewing all files on your PCs from your mobile devices has never been easier, faster, or safer.

Using Polkast is as easy as downloading the free app and logging in. It is available for Windows 7, iOS-based devices and Android-based devices. 25 percent use smartphones, not computers, for majority of Web surfing - msnbc.com

Pew Internet Project

As more of us gravitate to smartphones, we're relying on them for more of our Web surfing; 25 percent of Americans say they're now doing most of their Internet browsing on their phones instead of a computer, according to a new report from the Pew Internet Project.

A striking 87 percent of smartphone owners check the Internet or email on their phones, including 68 percent who do so generally every day, and 25 percent say they "mostly go online using their phone, rather than with a computer."

"While many of these individuals have other sources of online access at home, roughly one third of these 'cell mostly' Internet users lack a high-speed home broadband connection," said Pew in its report, "Smartphone adoption and usage."

Smartphone ownership continues to increase in the U.S.; a recent Nielsen survey showed that 55 percent of consumers who bought a new phone in the last three months got a smartphone over a more bare-bones feature phone, up from 34 percent a year ago.

Among Pew's findings, based on a national telephone survey of 2,277 adults done between April 26 and May 22:

35 percent of adults own a smartphone of some kind. "The financially well-off, college graduates, those under the age of 45, and non-whites are especially likely to be smartphone owners."35 percent of smartphone owners have an Android phone, while iPhones and BlackBerrys are each owned by 24 percentof smartphone adopters. Android phones "are especially prevalent among young adults and African-Americans, while iPhone and BlackBerry adopters skew towards those with relatively high levels of income and education."

A "word cloud" that Pew created, based on comments by smartphone owners, yielded these "feelings" about those phones: "awesome," "great," "convenient," "necessary," "useful," and "love." To a lesser degree, these words were also used: "frustrating," "expensive," "hate," "sucks" and the all-encompassing: "expletive."

HTC Sensation: exploring HTC Sense 3.0 - Geekzone

Originally, I was going to bore you with the history of HTC Sense UI, but I figure if you are interested you can Wikipedia it. HTC Sense 3.0 is the UI that the Telecom New Zealand provided HTC Sensation handset is running and I want to introduce you to it. Before we begin however, I must warn you of two things:

1. I have included a ton of screenshots.
2. I have changed the phone skin so everything is purple - the default is black.

I had heard some good things about Sense UI before using it on the HTC Sensation, but was wary due to my experience on the Samsung Galaxy S (SGS). I'm not going to say that the Sense has blown my mind, but it has certainly opened my eyes to how sensationally slick and integrated a custom UI can be (sorry, couldn't resist the urge to make an awful pun).

As you may know, my previous phone was the Samsung SGS. It was a device that came tainted with TouchWiz and looked like it was designed by children wielding brightly coloured crayons. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of overlays on Android and rather enjoy customising the look of my phone to suit me. Fortunately, in this regard Sense does not disappoint (remember: I warned you about the purple).

Calling Sense UI an overlay or comparing it to TouchWiz doesn't really do it justice or explain what it is. It is in fact much more comprehensive than TouchWiz and almost completely replaces the stock Android UI. The main component of Sense is the Launcher (apparently, its nickname is Rosie, for some reason). It has seven home screens, that like any other Android device you can fill with widgets to your heart's content.

HTC Sense includes a vast array of widgets to help you out (81 is pretty vast, right?); from social media via FriendStream to viewing your virtual bookshelf with the My Shelf widget, there are enough decent widgets to satisfy nearly everyone.

You can rotate between the screens with the quick swipe of a finger, and if you swipe fast enough it turns into a carousel animation. You might also notice that there is a 3D effect on most of the HTC Widgets - for example, the clock practically pops out of the screen when you rotate between home screens. The animations here are pretty smooth; probably due to the Dual Core 1.2Ghz Snapdragon roaring under the hood.

One of the most highly touted features in Sense 3.0 is the new lock screen:

You can select up to four application shortcuts, which you can easily open by dragging them into the silver circle. It's pretty slick and loads better than the stock android lock screen. It also goes together nicely with another great feature of the HTC Sensation: the Instant-on camera.

Basically, the idea is that you can easily switch to the camera from the lock screen and then push the shutter button, instantly capturing the image. At first, I thought this was just marketing speak; but the shutter speed is actually very fast and it does capture the image with no delay. After taking the image, you get to see a preview of what was taken for another three seconds (this can be changed as well) before being able to take another shot.

The Sensation can easily replace a normal 'point and shoot' camera. Its eight megapixel sensor defaults to a resolution of 3264 X 1840 at 16:9 aspect ratio. The only downside here is the lack of a physical shutter button.

Another one of the main attractions is the amazing weather widget and application, which I will demonstrate along with some smooth home screen scrolling in the video below. I have to say, the 4.3" qHD display on the Sensation is pretty great and everything looks a lot sharper than on the SGS.

One of the not-so-highly praised features of the Sense UI is how it handles incoming calls. It has a few intuitive features. These include:

. If your phone rings and you are otherwise occupied, just flip the phone over so that it's face down and it will immediately go silent.
. It rings louder when it's inside your bag so you can hear it better, but gets quieter when you pick it up.

You also get a slightly different incoming call screen depending on whether you have the phone locked or not. With both versions you get to see the latest social media updates and a profile photo for that person, which is quite a nice touch (assuming you sync with Facebook or Twitter). With the lock screen version it acts just like the normal lock screen where you drag the icon into the silver circle. In case you're worried I did blur the name/phone number, as my fiance probably wouldn't appreciate me publicly posting it. >.<

A lot of this stuff might seem like fluff, but it really does round out the sensational experience (oops, I did it again) and makes it feel that much more complete.

One of the things that I was afraid of losing when switching from the SGS was the ability to quickly change settings from the notification bar. Thankfully, Sense includes a Quick Settings window in the Notification bar that lets you turn on or off most of the functions that you might need.

The main notification bar is also pretty sweet as it has a sliding bar of your last used applications. This saves you from holding down the Home button for ages so you can switch apps (yes, three seconds in geek time is ages).

Don't forget to keep an eye out for my next post, where I'll be exploring the integration of Sense UI applications as well as all of the ways in which the UI can be customised.

Reports: Dell close to introducing new Windows-compatible tablet - Austin American-Statesman

By Kirk Ladendorf

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Published: 8:01 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2011

Dell Inc. might be getting close to introducing a new Windows-compatible tablet computer, according to several tech websites that published photos of proposed prototypes Monday.

A list of tech websites all quoted from a blog called DellPejuInsider that disclosed what it said were Dell internal documents and photos of prototypes of the forthcoming computer.

Dell had no comment on the reports.

Jeff Clarke, Dell's vice chairman for global operations, said in an analyst meeting last week that the company intends to develop mobile Internet devices that are aimed at enterprise business users, but not necessarily consumers.

The blog showed a prototype bearing a Dell logo that had a 10-inch screen, weighed 1.9 pounds, ran with an Intel Core i5 processor and had Wi-Fi and cellular 3G and 4G connectivity.

The blog said the tablet used Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 7 software but added that it was "Windows 8 compatible," a reference to Microsoft's forthcoming software that is expected to be ready next year.

Dell already has a tablet called the Streak, based on Google's Android software. Sales of the Streak, introduced last year, have been disappointing, analysts say.

The "Peju" could be a way of attracting the interest of corporate buyers who are waiting for the arrival of Windows 8 before they commit.

Analyst Rob Enderle with the Enderle Group said such a Dell tablet could be a "placeholder product" for a stronger offering based in Windows 8 that will be available in 2011.

Enderle said he expects Windows 8 will be available in a test version late this year, so corporate buyers could try the new Windows software on a Dell tablet and see whether they want to buy it next year.

"Corporate buyers can test Windows 8 in advance with a product like this," Enderle said.

The tablet would underscore Dell's commitment to being a close partner with Microsoft in the tablet market. That tight alliance with Microsoft, something Dell has always depended on for everything from desktop computers to servers, "could be huge for Dell" in the tablet market, he said.

Analyst Roger Kay with Endpoint Technologies Associates said Dell's Streak tablet "has been a misfire. Dell tried the Android wagon, and it hasn't worked so well."

But Microsoft, a longtime business ally for Dell, could be a better fit than Google in the tablet market.

"Dell feels that it has to be in that market because there is a lot of focus that has shifted onto it and Dell does not want to be perceived as being left behind," Kay said.

"Their strength is not with consumers. Their take is to be well-suited for helping commercial customers. Having a tablet gives them bragging rights. If all you are doing is selling desktops, that is hard to do."

Tablet computers re-emerged as a promising market in 2010 with the introduction of Apple Inc.'s touted iPad. The IDC market research firm said it expects more than 53 million tablets will be sold this year, with Apple dominating the market.

Though the iPad has been a hit with consumers, analysts say that many corporations are waiting to see whether Microsoft can develop a tablet that is more business-friendly, with plenty of security features.

Mobile Gaming Stocks: Will Cheap Games Hurt the Video Game Industry? - Business Insider

Kapitall is an online investing platform that combines the world's friendliest investing experience with powerful yet simple tools to build your skills - and maybe even your net worth.

RSS Feed

If you're a child of the 1980s, then there's a good chance that Nintendo's inaugural video game console topped your Christmas or Hannukah wishlist when the first-generation system debuted. Back then, saving the pixelated princess was the easy part--the real challenge was just getting the game to load, involving shaking, blowing on and sometimes even smacking the temperamental cartridge around.

Hard to believe that today, game play is as easy as simply turning on your phone.

Mobile gaming is on the rise, and revolutionizing the gaming industry--according to a recent study by Nielsen, the average iPhone user spends about 15 hours a month playing games on their smartphones.

Android users clocked in slightly above the overall average smartphone user, at 9.3 hours compared with 7.8 hours over a 30-day period. 64% of downloaders have loaded a new game onto their phone within the last 30 days, making games the most popular, and lucrative, category of smartphone applications.

Need more proof? Social and mobile gaming giant Zynga just filed a $1 billion IPO.

So what does all this mean for console gaming systems? If you ask Peter Vesterbacka, creator of the popular Angry Birds game for mobile phones, their days are numbered.

Quoted at SXSW declaring "consoles are dying," Vesterbacka sees the future of gaming in mobile and social mediums, while traditional companies charging $40 or $50 for a game are heading toward extinction.

But Nintendo president Satoru Iwata makes a compelling counterargument: “Consider this: the number of games available on the big app sites is in the tens of thousands. Game development is drowning. Yes, these games are far less expensive to create, but what revenue will they generate?”

Does the rise of the cheap mobile game signal weaker sales for video game companies that produce more expensive "premium" games for consoles? You be the judge--here's a list of companies with exposure to the trend.

Hewlett-Packard Reorganizes Bradley's PC Unit to Promote WebOS Software - Bloomberg

Hewlett-Packard Reorganizes Bradley’s PC Unit to Promote Web A customer looks at a Hewlett-Packard Co. laptop computers on display in New York. Photographer: Ramin Talaie/Bloomberg

Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), the world’s largest computer maker, is reorganizing its personal-computer division as part of a push to broaden use of the software it gained from the acquisition of Palm Inc.

Jon Rubinstein, Palm’s former chief executive officer, will take charge of product development and innovation for the Personal Systems Group, which encompasses PCs, tablets and smartphones. Senior Vice President Stephen DeWitt will run a new unit responsible for developing and promoting the WebOS computer operating system. Both will report to Todd Bradley, who runs PSG. DeWitt discussed the changes in an interview today.

Hewlett-Packard is counting on the integration of WebOS to differentiate its products from rival machines, including Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPad and those using Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android. Hewlett- Packard CEO Leo Apotheker said in February that all of the company’s PCs will feature WebOS by the end of next year, a shift away from machines that only run Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Windows operating system.

Rubinstein helped create the iMac and iPod at Apple before becoming Palm’s CEO. He will now be Hewlett-Packard’s senior vice president of product innovation and will work on projects that span the Palo Alto, California-based company, including the printing group, DeWitt said.

“We’re fortunate to have Jon doing that voodoo that he does,” DeWitt said. “He’s going to bring his knowledge, experience and passion for building products across the PSG portfolio.”

Apotheker is reorganizing business units to revive growth and take back market share after slicing $1 billion from the company’s annual revenue forecast in May. Corporations are “wary” of large-scale information-technology spending amid concerns about global economic growth, Apotheker said at a July 9 technology conference in Aix-en-Provence, France.

On June 14, Hewlett-Packard said executives in charge of global sales, software and data-center equipment and services would report directly to Apotheker.

Hewlett-Packard bought Palm last year to add mobile devices and software to its product lineup.

DeWitt, who joined Hewlett-Packard in 2008 from a closely held computer maker named Azul Systems Inc., had been responsible for sales, marketing and operations of personal systems in North America. Stephen DiFranco, a former general manager at Hewlett-Packard, is now a senior vice president, taking DeWitt’s former role. The personal systems group was responsible for $40.7 billion in sales last year.

DeWitt will take charge of engineering, research and development, and sales and marketing for WebOS. Hewlett- Packard’s TouchPad tablet computer, which runs on WebOS, went on sale July 1, accompanied by an advertising campaign featuring Jay-Z and other celebrities.

“It’s critical for us to expand our programs” and entice more developers to create applications for the platform, DeWitt said.

The WebOS operating system includes the ability to run multiple applications at once and lets developers design apps that talk to each other. For example, information from Facebook can be shared in users’ contact lists. It also lessens Hewlett- Packard’s reliance on Microsoft’s Windows software.

Bradley said in an interview that July 1 was a “soft launch” for the TouchPad and that more advertising will commence on July 17. The company also plans to issue a software update for the tablet in about 10 days, he said.

“We’ve had two weeks of kicking the tires at retail,” he said. “We’ve got a phenomenal tablet product.”

Still, the company must compete with Apple’s best-selling iPad tablet and devices running Android software. Hewlett- Packard has “a really good opportunity to become No. 2 in tablets fairly quickly,” Rubinstein said in a June interview.

Hewlett-Packard also is in talks to license the WebOS mobile software to other hardware makers, Apotheker said in an interview in Beijing last month. Samsung Electronics Co. held talks to use WebOS in its smartphones, according to three people with knowledge of the discussions.

Hewlett-Packard lost $1.14, or 3.1 percent, to $35.29 at 4 p.m. on the New York Stock Exchange. The shares have declined 16 percent this year.

Why The Non-iPad-Tablet Isn't Selling - ConceivablyTech

This week I moderated a panel on tablet computers at the Freescale Technology Forum with tablet and eBook specialist Stewart Wolpin, Chuong Nguyen, and In-Stat’s Stephanie Ether. We discussed why non-iPad tablets weren’t selling, the fight between ARM and x86 for the future of computing, and whether Android or Windows 8 would have a chance in what is being termed the post-PC era.

Apple iPad 2 Apple iPad 2

Beating the iPad

The issue with competing with Apple is that Apple monetizes their entire eco-system, designs products to be marketed, and out-spends and out executes their competitors by a factor of anywhere from 2x to more than 10x. Companies that try to compete with them tend to under-resource their efforts, which is why Apple dominated the iPod market and dominates the iPad market. Apple also crafts an entire experience where most others do just one part. The result is that the product that comes out of this process appears to be much better for most buyers than what the competition offers. In combination with Apple’s talent to create demand, the company is nearly unbeatable.

Until a vendor is willing to step up to this level of competition, the only way to compete effectively with Apple is to either create products that go where Apple doesn’t want to go geographically or sharpen the product focus. Dell, for instance, is focusing on China first where Apple is weak, and Lenovo and Panasonic are focusing on business first where Apple is weak as well. Panasonic, in particular, is adding outdoor capability and heavy hardening so their tablet can be used in weather or simply outside.

ARM vs. x86

The sense is that consumers just don’t want to care about the technology that is in their products. They buy an experience (which is, coincidently, what Apple sells). The panel made fun of current ads that focused on the number of cores in a tablet or the wireless technology that is in them rather than the experience, because it showcases that many tablet builders/marketers simply don’t understand the market.

The trend is toward ARM for this new class of devices, but ARM as a platform is divided between competing vendors that don’t supply enough cash to effectively co-fund the marketing for the devices they create. Intel has historically been much better funded and they, along with Microsoft and Apple, fund most of the PC marketing in the world. Intel could reverse the current ARM trend, if it can bring an ability to create demand to acceptably competitive products.

Android vs. Windows 8 vs. iOS

As mentioned above, Apple is both focused and well-funded. Google and Microsoft both have the capability to fund at Apple levels, but Microsoft has a history of starving the marketing of their own groups and Google of not funding marketing much at all. This is all about capturing the hearts and minds of people who increasingly believe that Apple is the only real choice. The longer Apple dominates tablets, the more expensive it will be to effectively challenge this dominance. Google is in the market now, but with three versions of Android on tablets and ChromeOS trying to enter the market at the same time. They are the exact opposite of Apple’s focus and that, coupled with the severe lack of marketing, would suggest they are simply not willing to step up and compete at even a fraction of the level that is needed.

Microsoft is vastly more focused and potentially stronger, but they won’t really enter the segment until late 2012, which gives Apple a significant period of time to consolidate and lock in the market. By waiting as long as they are they have, they significantly increased the cost of breaking Apple’s market lock-in, but are unlikely to match their marketing budget to that requirement. They have one of the strongest marketing teams on the planet, but it is under resourced or otherwise constrained against a better funded and less constrained dominant vendor. Their odds are better than Androids long-term chances (unless Google takes this more seriously), but they aren’t especially great either, at least not for tablets.

Tablets vs. eBooks

In-Stat just completed a survey with some interesting results. It showcased that, as you would expect, eBooks like the Kindle are bought and beloved by heavy readers, while tablets are bought by those wanting a better multi-media experience. A Kindle buyer is willing to pay over $500 for a tablet while a non-Kindle buyer was highly resistant to prices over $300. This suggests that a Kindle is actually a strong bridge to a tablet and that buyers use both devices, but for different reasons. In effect, the Kindle and the iPad, far from being the competitors we have always thought they were, are actually complimentary. These results suggest that if Apple brought out a successful eBook reader, it would be additive and complimentary to the iPad, particularly if the two would sync in the iCloud. Apple doesn’t normally miss opportunities like this.

Conclusion

There was an overall sense that this tablet market is still very young and that different sizes and form factor products may eventually eclipse the iPad, but not without a better investment in marketing and the overall user experience than what currently exists in the market. There wasn’t a lot of love for RIM or HP, the two vendors with their own platforms, because neither vendor has demonstrated the ability to step up to the huge burden of going against Apple alone. We all saw some amazing hardware designs that differentiate well against the iPad at Freescale’s Forum, but we are waiting for a vendor to step up to the other requirements that would result in a device that would sell like an iPad.

(On the demo and show floor side, one of the cool demonstrations at the show was a tablet application that would both diagnose any problems with your car and remote-monitor and control it. It would be amazing to be able to log into my car remotely and check on it or occasionally scare the crap out of someone walking by. Yes, I have a twisted sense of humor that may unfortunately flourish in the coming tablet centric connected world being showcased at this event. I can hardly wait.)
