ERRIN Fulp, Professor of computer science at Wake Forest University, is training an army of "digital ants" loose transform the electric network to search for computer viruses, trying to take the toll on the system.
If the approach proves successful in the safeguarding of the electrical network, it may have broad on the protection of what applications it is connected to the SCADA (control and Data Acquisition) networks, computer systems that control everything, water and sewage systems to systems of transit in manufacturing systems.
Fulp works this summer with scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland Washington, on the next steps in digital technology of ants, developed by PNNL and Wake Forest in recent years.
The approach is so promising that he was named by Scientific American magazine the year as one of "ten technologies that have the power to change our lives."
