The scam was spotted Tuesday by Sophos anti-virus software provider. At this time, the criminals behind it were luring victims in the installation of the software providing links allegedly for a video of disgraced former International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn and a servant of the hotel. On Wednesday switched scam and the link was supposed to be a celebrity Rihanna and Hayden Panettiere X-rated video.
In both cases there is no such video. People, click on the link are sent to a Web site tries to install the false antiviru software. The scam is slightly different, depending on the question of whether the victim is using a Mac or a PC. On the PC, the site tells victims that they need to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player to view video. But that software installation is in reality the fake antivirus program.
On Mac, there is a pop-up window that looks like a security warning. When victims click to "fix" the problems of security, they eventually install the fake software.
Once installed, the software pop up scary warning messages and takes the victim to a pornographic site every five minutes until that the victim pays for a software license - usually a charge of US$ 60 to $ 80. The software also displays the video links on the wall of the victim to try to attract new victims. Money for the apparently false antiviru product puts the dormant software where it causes no damage, said Chet Wisniewski, a researcher with Sophos antivirus software provider.
Tuesday, the website used by fraudsters was newtubes.in, but on Wednesday, they switched to shockings.in.
Sean Sullivan, an advisor with F - Secure Labs Security, said he is not sure why Facebook is not just block messages containing malicious links. "Seems as if it would be easy", but the attackers could be using tricks to escape the Facebook scam, filtering systems, said.
On Wednesday, a spokesman for Facebook could not say why the links were difficult to stop, but he confirmed that the company was "in the process of studying, blocking links and cleanup all users concerned."
This type of fake software antiviru has recently become a real problem for Mac users. On Tuesday, Apple began offering some of security daily updates of its operating system from Mac OS X 10.6. But fraudsters have become so expert to modify their programs to evade detection that they could skirt Apple detection with the latest version of their software of the scam, Wisniewski said.
False software goes by several names, including MacGuard and MacDefender.
