The Power Supply of your PC does just that, takes power from your cord and changes it down to the voltage the computer or ( motherboard ) can handle and distribute. they vary in range Older computers were at 250 watts ( Pentium 1-3 Processor boards) up to these days 750 watts and above! As i mentioned in other articles DUST CAN KILL components by causing overheating! So its a very good idea to take a small can of compressed air at LEAST once a month and blow out your power supply vent(s) after you take the side cover of you Computer case off.. It only take 30 seconds and can help prevent overheating. The fan inside the power supply also help to keep the component in the inside cool cause as we all know where we put our desktop towers ( on the floor next a wall or desk etc..) where there isn't alot of ventilation for air to flow. so case fans and fan in the power supply are pretty much a MUST. A case fan help to circulate all the air flow inside the case and help keeps everything inside the case cooler than it would be without it.
Power supply all pretty much do the same thing but over the years the interfaces have evolved, from standard 20 Pinns connections ( see picture above) to 24 pinn connections and so on.
Lights:
If your power supply has a LED on the back and tit lights up and the system doesn't turn on you know its getting power but not enough to boot the system. If this doesn't light up then your pretty much out of luck as its not even getting enough to power 1 little LED light. However they do make a tool called a power supply tester you can purchase
if your power supply tests bad then its off to Ebay or the store you go but be sure to either take your old one with you so you can get the type of pinn connector and voltage or better for your replacement. It also depends on what you have in your system. a high end Graphics cards, DVD burner, dual core processor, etc the more you have hooked up the power your gonna need so for these days for a average web surfer ,blogger and burn DVDs i suggest at least 500 watts or better!?

Processor problems
The Processor: the Brains of the Computer
"Heat kills Electronics" This is why there is a big old heat sink and fan on top where your processor is located. This is meant to disapate heat and help to circulate air inside the case. Heck, there are even Graphics cards that have their own little processor and cooling fan ( newer models)by ATI, Nvidea etc...
Thermal past is also used on top of the CPU to help insulate heat from the cpu and conduct it to the heat sink and fan, its a glue like substance and is NEEDED ... without it in a matter of SECONDS you can burn up you CPU.. Here is a little video tutorial on how to replace a Processor
One thing very critical to remember when installing a CPU, DONT BEND THE PINNS. I these are not completely aligned they will not fit and the cpu will not work! ALso its always a good idea to ground yourself

Hopefully you dont get this far in but if you hear Clicking and its not you cooling fan tehn your hard drive is on its way out, I'd advise to go "quickly" get a usb flash drive in a sd card and BACKUP your files quickly beofore your hard drive completly DIES! Question: How Do I Check and Fix Errors on My Hard Drive?
The first sign that a hard drive is going bad is logical errors found using a utility like CHKDSK.
Answer: The CHKDSK Utility can check and fix hard drive errors. CHKDSK scans the hard drive, corrects logical sector errors, marks bad sectors that cannot be fixed and moves data to safe, healthy places on the hard drive. Some Basics-- Memory
You can NEVER have enough memory!
I get the question alot," how come my Computer is so slow? it wasnt this slow when i bought it. Well, Way back when you bought it maybe the programs or operating system wasnt such a memory hog like Windows vista and Windows 7.. However there could be several other factors for your systems slow performance. Things like, swap file size on your hard drive, physical condition of your hardware. etc.. here is a bullet point of several other causes for slow performance
antirus in the background
malware programs running
unwanted or un needed programs running in the background
add-ons
Bad hardware struggling to keep up
Worn out hardware ( ie Ram sticks , Processor)
Hardware overheating
Hopefully its just a simple matter of disabling or uninstalling some malware in your "msconfig" or startup options. However it is recomended to have at least 512 Mb or ram/ memory for windows XP and as for Windows vista or Windows 7, 1GB is the bare minimum with very low settings. Install at least 2-3 Gigabites of memory if you gonna run alot of apps or widgets in Vista or Windows 7. They are small programs but after running for a while they temd to eat up memory. If all else fails and your computer tends to shut it self off there is a program out there you can burn to a cd and have it run right at startup and TEST your ram. Its called "MEMTESTx86" just google it and there are several sites where you can download it with instructions on how to burn it to a disk. here is a link to it

IF none of these step help your situation then it is most likely time to Upgrade or go buy a new Computer as Applications are getting to be more "memory hogs" and ram is cheaper Laptop ram has went From

SD ram
DDR
DDR2
DDR3
the cheapest of the lot is DDR3 most laptops can hold up to 4gb for the lowerend models, and 16-32 gb for the higherend models like Alienware. Desktops are about the same. Store bought Desktops these day comes NEW with at least 4 gb ram whcih for most people are more than enough, untill they get into online gaming, video editing etc..
